Its 2D capabilities and ease of use surpass GameMaker, and it also allows for 3D as well. Personally, I wouldn't recommend GameMaker at all if you decide to go the traditional programming route, and instead would suggest the Godot Engine, which is 100% free, open-source, no royalties, etc. Its claim to fame is that you don't need any programming experience to use it, though this can be more time consuming/limiting in the long run compared to regular programming.Ĭompared to GameMaker Studio, Clickteam is far better at visual programming, where as GameMaker allows you to use a Javascript-like language as well. You can certainly create good games with it. Also I believe the AVGN game was made with it. The creator of The Game Making Journey uses Clickteam Fusion exclusively. When you'll get more expercienced, you might want to learn "real programming" to be more efficient, but for a beginner, it's the best route imho. But unity and game maker are harder to pick up as you'll need to learn a language to create real games with them, unlike clickteam fusion that will allow you to make everything with your mouse only. Unity is a different beast, way more powerful, as it's geared towards 3d games, although it's also very capable for 2d games. The exporter are also quite polished, and you'll be able to "code once, publish on desktop, html5, mobile" without too much trouble.īasically, it's as powerful as gamemaker and construct, who are both limited to 2d games too. For beginners, it the best program to start because you can create real games without any need to learn coding: everything is made through clicking and choosing items on a giant interaction table. You can have loads of sprites moving and shooting, and the engine won't slow down. It's limited to 2d games, but it's very powerful in this area. As someone who started to create games with the first "version" of this program, called Klik and play and released in 1994, and who used its follows ups for about 10 years, I 100% recommend you to try it out.
